A DEEPER DIIVE
First, let’s break down the difference between Cocoa (pronounced “koko”) and Cacao (pronounced “kakaow”). Cocoa powder has been roasted a long time at high temperatures, which changes the molecular structure & lowers its nutritional value. It’s processed with sugar and other substances for commercial use. Cacao powder is also highly processed to commercial standards, removing the bean’s natural fat. However, “ceremonial-grade” cacao refers to Meso-American beans from the Theobroma cacao tree that have been fermented, lightly roasted, and ground into a paste. “Ceremonial-grade” cacao is minimally processed, organically grown, and harvested using traditional methods.
Ceremonial cacao has been used “medicinally” for thousands of years. For example, a married couple having problems would be given cacao to drink while they talked through their issues. Community leaders would share the traditional cacao beverage while engaging in conversations to resolve conflict. It was offered to strangers ~ travelers who arrived in Mesoamerica so they could recover physically from their journey. It was used to aid in self healing and to awaken creativity. It was used as an opportunity for people to come together, share heart-felt insights, set goals & connect.
How does ceremonial grade cacao help assist in all of these wonderful ways? Because its compounds cross the blood brain barrier and promote neurotransmitters that help us feel calm, relaxed, open, happy and more empathic. Endorphins, serotonin, dopamine, and oxytocin boost mood. Theobromine affects the cardiovascular system causing slight vasodilation. Phenylethylamine (PEA)can mimic the feeling of falling in love. It is known as the “love molecule.” Anandamide is known as the “bliss” chemical. Tryptophan, an amino acid, helps with mood and stress. Tyrosine, an amino acid, converts into dopamine in the body.
Sharing Ceremonial Cacao in a nourishing environment is a wonderful way to open and “rest” in the heart, connect with yourself, heal what needs healing, invite creativity, and connect with others in a deep and meaningful way.
